The Importance of Colors of Underground Utility Lines

Underground utilities can easily be identified today. Before, it was difficult to do so and people were at risk if they try to make a dig without being able to identify all the lines underneath the land. Today, the risks have been lessened although not completely eliminated. If there is a need to dig the ground, it is very important that the utility lines first be identified. If you need to dig through a piece of land today, you are required by the OSHA to first identify or locate underground utilities. You dont want something disastrous to occur. The worst thing that can happen if lines are not identified is that fatal injuries can happen. It can also interrupt services in your area where the line is located. To prevent these types of incidents, it is important for property owners to call 811 so utility companies can identify their undergoing lines. Calling the 811 number will enable utility companies to come out and mark their respective utility lines.

But, despite the marks, there will sill be accidents. It is said that every 6 minutes, there is a utility line that is struck. Traffic lights, wastewater pipes, telecommunication lines, etc. are affected when lines are struck. This is then something that affects public health and safety.

With the use of GPR or Ground Penetrating Radar, companies can locate utility lines. When locating utility lines underground, this machine makes it easy to do so. However, for the ordinary homeowner, it is enough to simply call 811 to be able to let companies located their lines.

It is easier to identify underground utility lines today because they now use different colors for each utility. The colors below indicate the kind of utility uses it.

White lines are for proposed excavation sites. You can mark areas with white lines that will soon be excavated.

Temporary survey markings use pink lines. Surveyors use pink lines to mark off legal property boundaries.

Red lines are used to mark electric power lines, cable, conduit, and lighting cable. This color is appropriate for electrical works since it is associated with fire and danger.

If you see yellow lines, then they are lines for gas, oil, steam, petroleum, and gaseous materials. Bright yellow is an appropriate warning color since it is very disastrous to have a natural gas leak.

If you see orange lines, then you should associate this with communication., alarm, signal lines, cable or conduit. Lines for potable water use blue lines. If you see purple lines, that this is for reclaimed water, irrigation and slurry lines. Green lines are used for sewer and drain lines. Hitting this line can truly derail any project for a long period of time.
